Tasting Notes

Colour : A vibrant crimson colour with a purple core.

Nose : Savoury aromas laced with bay leaf/spice. Some
blackcurrant/blackberry aromas show, most
likely due to the 9% Cabernet, albeit from warmer
climes in a cool year. There are some secondary
characters, demi-glace/soy, no doubt from
14mths in large oak vats.

Palate : A classy young St. Henri – elegance, balance,
substance and persistence. Dark fruits with
background liquorice and dark spices reflect
Barossa and McLaren Vale origins. The palate is
tight and defined, yet texturally round and soft,
with ripe tannins

A classic effort, the 2002 Shiraz St. Henri (91% Shiraz and 9% Cabernet
Sauvignon) was aged 14 months in old 1,460 liter vats. First introduced
in 1953, the St. Henri offering is considered to be a quintessential old
Southern Australian-styled red. The 2002 was sourced from the Barossa,
McLaren Vale, Clare Valley, and the Fleurieu Peninsula. This stunningly
rich, distinctive Shiraz offers up scents of Provencal herbs, bay
leaves, blackberries, black currants, new saddle leather, and loads of
meaty characteristics. Rich, texturally opulent, and soft, this heady
offering should drink well for 10-12 years. It is also a very good
bargain in the scheme of Penfolds?ˉ pricing.

One of the finest releases ever of this benchmark shiraz, with an
alluring and slightly meaty fragrance of dark plums, blackberries, dark
chocolate, backed by spicy and smoky undertones. Made in the traditional
velvet-smooth Australian ??burgundy?ˉ style, it?ˉs soft and juicy, with a
deeply flavoured and layered palate whose deep, dark core of vibrant
dark fruit flavours is tightly wrapped in fine, approachable tannins.
Marvellously long, it finishes with freshness and acidity, with
underlying hints of mineral. Drink 2022-2032+

Excellent colour; a medium-bodied wine
which lives up to the expectations of a great vintage; intense black
fruits run through a long, perfectly balanced palate, finishing with
fine tannins, oak largely unseen.

Dense, juicy and powerfully aromatic, with a silky texture to the
focused cherry and herb flavors that are long and expressive, melding
together beautifully. Needs time to develop extra layers of flavor,
which this should do.–St. Henri non-blind vertical. 3,800 cases
imported.
